Guess what? I have flaws. What are they? Oh I donno, I sing in the shower? Sometimes I spend too much time volunteering. Occasionally I’ll hit somebody with my car. So sue me.

It was the 22nd of October, 2013, and 24-year-old Davers High School maths teacher, Colleen Ritzer, didn’t return home after work. Her family became concerned when it was discovered that her car was still in the school’s parking lot. However, this disappearance was overshadowed by another disappearance on the same day. 14-year-old Philip Chism, a student at Danvers High School, disappeared after school. Nobody could have anticipated the grim correlation between the two disappearances.

On that afternoon, Chism had followed Ritzer into the women’s bathroom at school before unleashing a violent and sustained attack. Inside the bathroom, he strangled the young teacher into unconsciousness before brutally raping her. At one point during the attack, another student walked into the bathroom and assumed that the duo in the bathroom were having consensual sex before abruptly leaving to use a different bathroom. Following this assault, Chism produced a box cutter and slashed and stabbed Ritzer to death. She suffered a total of 16 wounds. As she lay in the stall bleeding to death, Chism left the bathroom and wheeled in a large bin. He shoved Ritzer’s bloody body into the bin and wheeled the bin to a nearby woods where he raped her once again. This time, however, he decided he would rape her with a stick.

He was eventually tracked down as he was walking alongside a highway of a neighbouring town at approximately 12:30am. When police found his school ID in his pocket, they realised he was the missing teenager. It hasn’t yet dawned on them that he had something to do with Ritzer’s murder. In his pocket, however, was Ritzer’s drivers license along with her credit cards. Inside his backpack was the bloodstained box cutter as well as his bloodstained clothes. In addition, CCTV from the school caught the run up to the attack as well as Chism wheeling Ritzer’s body out in the bin.

During his trial, his defence attempted to argue that he certainly did commit the murder, however, should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. This attempt was unsuccessful, and after being found guilty, he was sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.
